LANGFORD & THE WEST SHORE

Online personal training in Langford and the West Shore

One-to-one online coaching for adults 50+ across Langford, built for golf, hills and a week that already contains far too much driving.

What sets Katie apart

The same hour, with me, wherever in the world you happen to be sitting.

  • Private one-to-one coaching — never a group, never a video you follow along to
  • Two live sessions a week, at times chosen around your week rather than a class timetable
  • A plan built for your body, your history and what you actually want to be able to do
  • Strength, mobility, balance, Pilates, yoga and restorative movement, in whatever mix the week calls for
  • Nutrition and wellness guidance woven through the coaching, included rather than added on
  • Someone who notices when something changes, and adjusts before it becomes a problem

The drive is already the problem

The West Shore has grown faster than anywhere else around here, and you can watch it happen from the road. Westhills went up inside a decade. Happy Valley keeps filling in. Bear Mountain sits above the lot of it.

Which means a great many people out here still have a commute. Some are working full weeks in town, some are semi-retired and consulting two days a week, and either way the day ends behind a windscreen. You leave early to get ahead of the bridge, you come back at five into whatever the highway is doing, and the last thing anybody wants at that point is to get back in the car for a class in Colwood at half six. That is not a willpower failure. No one’s willpower survives a second commute.

What people out here are training for

What matters to people out here tends to look different from what matters up the peninsula. There is more golf. There is more of somebody wanting to keep up with grandchildren who live nearby rather than a plane ride away. There is a lot of wanting the hills to stop being a negotiation.

And there is a particular one that comes up again and again: I feel fine, but I have noticed I get up out of a low chair differently than I used to. That is worth taking seriously and it is very trainable. It is leg strength and hip control, nothing more mysterious than that.

The hills here are the local curriculum

Goldstream is on your doorstep, and the trail up to Niagara Falls is gentle enough that almost anyone can enjoy it. Then there is Finlayson, which is a genuine root-and-rock scramble with a real descent, and the descent is what tells you the truth about your knees.

Even the flat stuff has character. The E&N Rail Trail runs long and level, which is perfect for building volume without pounding anything, and the loop at Florence Lake is a decent honest half hour. Bear Mountain roads climb in a way that turns a casual dog walk into a session whether you intended one or not.

None of that needs you to be an athlete. It needs your legs to have some capacity in reserve, and reserve is exactly what strength training buys you.

Golf, honestly

Bear Mountain is a large part of why some people moved here at all, and golf rewards two qualities more than anything else: the ability to rotate through your upper back, and the ability to control one leg at a time.

Lose the first and your lower spine quietly takes over the job, which is where most of the sore-back-after-a-round stories start. Lose the second and your balance through the swing goes, then your distance follows it. Add walking eighteen holes with a bag or pushing a cart across rolling ground — that is a couple of hours on your feet and it is why so many rounds fall apart on the closing holes rather than the opening ones.

So we work hips, mid-back rotation, and the unglamorous ability to stand up over and over from a slightly bent position without your back joining in.

Training in the house you already live in

The newer housing stock out here is quietly ideal for this. Bonus rooms, finished basements, a spare bedroom that is really a storage unit with a window. You need less space than you imagine and no equipment at all to begin with.

The arithmetic is worth doing. A session somewhere else is not an hour, it is closer to ninety minutes once you count the car at both ends and the parking. Twice a week across three months, that is most of a working day handed back to you — and, more to the point, it removes every excuse the weather and the highway can supply.

How I work

I spent years in several gyms before starting my own practice eighteen years ago, and I have been coaching for more than 25 in total. Everything now is one to one, live over video: private, personalized, and never a recorded programme you follow along to on your own.

Nutrition and wellness guidance comes with the coaching rather than beside it. I am a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, so when the real obstacle turns out to be energy, or sleep, or eating nothing until two in the afternoon, we can just deal with that instead of pretending training happens in isolation.

Where to begin

A fifteen-minute call first, so you can tell me what you want and I can tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it. Then a first session free, because an hour of actually training together tells us both far more than any amount of describing it.

After that, twice a week for around twelve weeks, and we take it from there. Let’s get to work.

Training in Langford — questions

I commute into town. When could we realistically train?

I coach Monday to Friday, eight in the morning through to six at night Pacific time, with some flexibility around the edges of that. Because there is no travel attached, a session fits into gaps that a gym never could — before the drive in, in a long lunch, straight off the end of a workday while you are still in the house. Two of those a week is the shape most people settle into.

Will this actually help my golf?

It should, and specifically. Most of what limits an older swing is not effort, it is rotation and hip control. If your mid-back has stopped turning, your lower back turns instead, and that is where the ache after nine holes usually comes from. So we train thoracic rotation, hip mobility, single-leg stability and enough leg strength to walk eighteen without fading over the last few holes.

There's no gym in my house. Is that going to be a problem?

Not remotely. A bonus room over the garage, the end of a basement, a cleared corner of a bedroom — any of those is enough. Newer West Shore houses tend to have a room currently holding boxes, and that room is your training space. Body weight, a chair and a bit of floor covers the first stretch, and anything we add later is small and easy to store.

My husband wants to train too. Can we do it in the same session?

Yes, and it works well. Couples training means both of you on the same call at the same time, each following your own plan, because you almost certainly do not need the same things. One of you may be working on knees while the other works on shoulders. What you share is the hour, the habit, and the fact that neither of you can quietly skip it.
