ONLINE COACHING · QUALICUM BEACH

Training that keeps up with a Qualicum Beach week

One-to-one online coaching for adults 50+ in Qualicum Beach, built for a village where the walking is easy, the golf is serious and the winters are long.

What sets Katie apart

The same hour, with me, wherever in the world you happen to be sitting.

  • Private one-to-one coaching — never a group, never a video you follow along to
  • Two live sessions a week, at times chosen around your week rather than a class timetable
  • A plan built for your body, your history and what you actually want to be able to do
  • Strength, mobility, balance, Pilates, yoga and restorative movement, in whatever mix the week calls for
  • Nutrition and wellness guidance woven through the coaching, included rather than added on
  • Someone who notices when something changes, and adjusts before it becomes a problem

A town built for walking, which isn’t the same as being strong

Qualicum Beach might be the most pleasantly walkable place on this coast. The village sits above the water, everything you need is inside a few blocks, and the promenade along 19A runs for kilometres with the strait on one side and almost no reason to stop. People here walk a great deal, and it shows.

Then something small happens. A suitcase that used to go into the overhead bin needs help. A grandchild wants to be picked up and you notice yourself calculating first. Getting off the floor after weeding turns into a two-stage operation with a hand on the bench.

That’s not a walking problem. It’s a strength problem, and walking was never going to solve it.

What the beach walk leaves undone

Here’s the part nobody enjoys hearing. Muscle keeps what you ask it to keep, and past fifty it stops handing you anything for free. Walking asks your legs for endurance and asks your arms, your back and your grip for essentially nothing. Standing steady on one foot slips away quietly in the background while you’re getting your steps in on flat pavement.

So the honest version is this: keep the walk. Add load. Two focused hours a week of resistance work, properly coached, changes what your body is capable of in a way that another five kilometres on 19A simply won’t.

The village is small, and that used to limit your choice

Most places make the argument about distance. Qualicum’s version is different, because Parksville is ten minutes away and Nanaimo is under an hour. Distance was never really the barrier.

Choice was. A town this size doesn’t support many coaches, and of those, hardly any spend their days working with adults over fifty. So you took whoever was available and hoped they understood why your shoulder doesn’t like overhead work any more.

Coaching by video removes that ceiling entirely. You aren’t picking from what happens to be nearby — you’re picking the person whose experience actually matches yours. Mine is twenty-five years of it, eighteen of those running my own practice. Before that, a kinesiology degree at McMaster and the lead volunteer job at its cardiac rehabilitation centre, where nearly everybody I worked with was somewhere between fifty and eighty.

Training for what you’d actually miss

Nobody in this town wants to be strong in the abstract. They want specific things back, or kept.

The golf, first. Eaglecrest and the Memorial course are woven into how people spend their days here, and a swing that still has rotation in it depends on hips and mid-back that move, not on a stronger grip. Then there’s the woodland trail at Milner Gardens, which is beautiful and steeper than visitors expect. Little Qualicum Falls has stairs and roots. Horne Lake means uneven ground and a scramble at the end. And there’s the long game — the wish to still be on that ground at eighty, not watching it from the car park.

Tell me which of those matters most to you and it becomes the point of the plan.

Storm season is where the habit is really tested

Summer here is busy and easy. The town fills up, the beach is warm, and everyone is outside without being asked.

November through February is the real test. The storms roll in, watching them from a window is genuinely one of the pleasures of living here, and a walking habit built entirely on good weather quietly disappears until March. Every year. Then spring arrives and you’re starting over again, a little further back than last time.

Training indoors, on a schedule, with someone expecting you, is what keeps the line flat through those months. You show up because it’s Tuesday at ten and I’m there. It sounds almost too simple to matter. It’s the single biggest difference between people who hold their strength through winter and people who rebuild it every spring.

How it actually runs

Twice a week, live, one to one. I can see you, you can see me, and I coach the set as it happens rather than sending you a video and hoping. Most people begin with about twelve weeks and then carry on, because by then the training has become part of the week rather than a project.

Nutrition and wellness guidance comes with it. Not a meal plan handed down from a height — a conversation about what you actually eat, in the life you actually have.

Questions from around Qualicum

Do I need to already be exercising to start with you?

Not remotely. Plenty of the people I coach arrive having done nothing structured in years, or nothing since a knee went sideways. That is a completely normal starting point and it is not something you need to fix before we begin. We find out what you can do today and we build from there.

I walk the beach most days. Isn't that enough on its own?

Walking is wonderful and I would never talk you out of it. It just doesn't ask your muscles to get stronger, and it barely touches your upper body or your balance on one leg. Strength work is the part walking can't do for you. The two together are much better than either alone.

My husband and I would rather do this together. Is that possible?

Yes, and it works well. You're both on the same call for the same hour, but each of you gets your own coaching, your own weights and your own progressions. Couples tend to keep going longer than either partner would have alone, which is reason enough on its own.

We go south for part of the winter. Does the coaching stop?

It doesn't have to. Because everything runs over video, a condo in Arizona works as well as a house on Chartwell — you just need floor space and a connection. We adjust the plan for whatever equipment you have there and pick up your usual sessions when you get home.
